The game

Before The Last Hour is a Rogue-Lite deck builder with an emphasis on exploration created by Lunaris Iris. The game takes you through multiple biomes with randomly generated maps. Events, quests and fights are sprinkled throughout to push you to make choices and upgrade your gear. Through out the exploration you are chased by a constantly reviving creature that pushes you to move forward. The game is currently on steam in early access.

We, at Ninpo were hired to integrate and create the gameplay features required to make the game tick according to the Game design, as well as integrating the visual assets.

My place in that project

As part of the team working on the project my main area of work was the user interface. I integrated and implemented most of the in-game UI for both exploration and combat. I also worked on the menus and options. I worked in close proximity with the designers to iterate on the feedbacks and design. I worked on a system to make the information on the cards as easy as possible to read for the player based on the numerical stats contained in the data.

I was also in charge of the gameplay connected to the exploration of the map, from tweeking the random generation of the map based on a previous developper's work to implementing the quest system.

Of course, a lot of debugging was necessary and I learned a lot on this project about how the pitfalls and shortcut one needs to avoid to facilitate problem solving.
