A classic take with a twist

Tiaren is a 3D tactical RPG in which you control a team of 3 characters. The goal is to use the terrain to take control of a mystical tiara and accompany it inside the enemy territory to win.

The game features classical tactical RPG concepts. Different classes are available, each based on a stereotypical medieval fantasy archetype such as mages or rogues. Characters have stats that determine how fast they act or how much damage they take from attacks.

They also posses abilities that form the core gameplay. These abilities can be specific to a character or shared among all. All in all a fairly standard approach for a tactical RPG.

BUT THERE IS A TWIST

The map is made out of blocks of different kinds, minecraft like, and the classes all have abilities catered toward modifying and reshaping the terrain. All characters can push or dig one block but some also have abilities made to affect multiple blocks. The mage for instance can build walls or craters while the figther can push blocks and characters in a line. The point is to reshape and use the terrain to your advantage.

My work on the project

The project was originally started as an end of cursus project in school. We had little help from the teacher which allowed us to truly explore what it meant to make a video game from scratch.
I was involved on the project since its inception. So my first role was as advisor on game design.

It was also my first time participating in design discution for the actual code of the game. The hierachy of classes, the design patterns we used, everything was decided by the team.

On development in particular I made all the in-game UI, I worked on the feedback for abilities and movement and implemented the behaviour of some of the abilities.
